Model Shipways English Pinnace 1:24 ship kit MS1458 Brief History: The pinnace was a lightly built, carvel planked boat. Designed to be rowed it had fewer than ten oars. Its only duty was transporting the captain and other officers from their anchored ship to the dockyards. Carrying crew and provisions was the job of heavier boats like the longboat or launch. The Kit: Designed by master ship modeler Chuck Passaro, this model replicates a 21-foot English pinnace inspired by similar contemporary models in National Maritime Museum of England. Plank-on-frame construction uses the finest laser cut basswood for the false keel & ribs. Planking strips, and other wooden components are provided for the floorboards, cap rail and thwarts. Other materials include cast metal anchor and stern transom, eyebolts, plus scale rigging. Pre-printed side friezes and rudder decorations are included as well. Model Shipways Kit No. MS1458 Scale 1/2” = 1 ft. (1:24) Model is 11-3/4" long and 2-1/2" high Difficulty Rating: Advanced Level

While the product is excellent, the instructions the opposite to user friendly
While the product is excellent, the instructions the opposite to user friendly. Would it be to much to ask to write a step by step guide, a parts index, tools required? This could be made into a novice friendly model if it wasn't for the poor instructions manual.

Plan sheet does not match the laser cut parts.
The plans I received are not in scale with the laser cut parts. Not even close. The laser cut parts are larger than what the plans depict. For example: The laser cut keel is right at 1/4 in depth and the "plan" reads 5/32".Another example: The instruction book recommends cutting a template using the plans for the aft platform. You will find the finished product much to small and this will waste your materials and time. The "plan" sheet is worthless. If you are a skilled model boat builder (I'm just a beginner, this is my second model boat) you can probably get around this by using the instruction manual only but otherwise I recommend skipping this particular kit.

A new version of a popular kit
Evidently this is a new and larger version of the popular 1:48 scale English Pinnace. I have not seen the kit, but I've watched others build** the 1:48 version, and I can tell you that it is one of the most popular boat kits you can find. It is listed as a beginner's build, but it is a challenge. This kit--at 1:24 scale-- is twice as large, which makes it much easier to build. If you're looking for a new hobby, and you have a taste for working carefully and patiently, then this makes an excellent first kit. Model Shipways is a fine company and they make some of the best ship kits, world-wide.**Go to Modelshipworld.com and search for "Build log English Pinnace" You'll get a lot of ideas.
